Slow R&B or neo-soul for me — something with a rhythm but not intrusive. Frank Ocean, SZA, The Weeknd early albums. Sets a mood without taking over. Silence makes me too self-conscious.
Electronic — specifically the ambient kind that doesn't have lyrics to accidentally start singing along to. Bicep, Four Tet, that space. Background presence without demanding attention.
My partner insists on silence and I've come around to it. There's something about hearing each other without a soundtrack that became much more intimate once I got over the initial awkwardness.
Trip-hop — Massive Attack, Portishead, Burial. Atmospheric, doesn't have a beat that creates pressure to match it, and it sounds genuinely cinematic in a way that enhances everything.
